Game Report

Highlights

Manchester City survived some late scares to eventually claim victory at Everton. Dominic Calvert-Lewin cancelled out Gabriel Jesus' opener before late goals from Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling sealed the points for the champions but not before Ederson made a couple of crucial saves.

Detail

Manchester City took charge of the early stages of the game - with Mahrez looking particularly menacing drifting in from the right. The Algerian's great cross should have been converted by Ilkay Gundogan who somehow hit the bar in front of an empty goal.

The visitors eventually got the goal they deserved. Mahrez laid the ball off for Kevin De Bruyne to hit a first-time cross which Jesus headed in.

Everton were too cautious early on but were forced to chase the game at 1-0 down. They got back on level terms when a poor clearance by Fernandinho led to Seamus Coleman crossing for Calvert-Lewin to head in.

Pep Guardiola's men got a grip on the game again in the second half with Mahrez remaining their standout performer. He exemplified that with an excellent free-kick to restore the lead.

Everton refused to surrender and came close to an equaliser. Ederson came to the champions' rescue when he denied Calvert-Lewin in a one-on-one and then kept out Yerry Mina's header from a corner.

City eventually killed the game off with a sweeping move. Mahrez was involved again along with substitute Sergio Aguero before Sterling rifled in off the underside of the bar.

Summary

A spirited effort from Everton who were very much in the game until the closing minutes. Manchester City were tested but showed their extra class in the end.
