Game Report

Highlights

Newport County claimed all three points with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park. The home side had the better of the opening 45 minutes but were unable to find a breakthrough and it was the Exiles who took the lead after 69 minutes when midfielder Tyreeq Bakinson ran on to wing-back Dan Butler's fine pass to beat home goalkeeper Zeus de La Paz. There was no way back on a frustrating afternoon for the Latics.

Detail

Newport County made their first ever visit to Boundary Park with Michael Flynn looking for the points to climb into the play-off places. They did have to survive two penalty shouts inside the opening half hour.

The home side were enjoying the better of the possession but found chances hard to come-by before striker Callum Lang finally tested visiting goalkeeper Joe Day with a shot from the edge of the box.

They had Zeus de La Paz for keeping on level terms when he tipped a shot from midfielder Josh Sheehan around the post and then pulled off a superb save to keep out defender Fraser Franks from the resulting corner.

Lang and winger Johan Branger-Engone both had shots blocked as half-time approached with the Exiles defending well and the two sides went into the break with the game still goal-less.

Defender Peter Clarke failed to hit the target with a header from close range early in the second half before Branger-Engone's downward header was well-saved by Day down in the bottom right-hand corner.

The deadlock was broken in the 69th minute when Butler's superb pass found Bakinson in the inside left channel and his run took him into the area before shooting across de La Paz and into the bottom right-hand corner.

The hosts should have rescued something from the game but substitute Jose Baxter headed straight at Day moments after coming off the bench before Day held on to a shot from Lang soon afterwards.

Summary

Michael Flynn will be delighted with the character of his side as they dug out this win. Oldham Athletic manager Frankie Bunn knows his side will perform worse than this and still win games this season.
