Game Report

Highlights

Goalkeeper Conrad Logan went from hero to villain for Mansfield Town as they drew 1-1 with Newport County in the first leg of their play-off semi-final at Rodney Parade. He made two fantastic saves to preserve the lead given to them by winger CJ Hamilton but conceded an unnecessary penalty which striker Padraig Amond converted at the second attempt.

Detail

Newport County were fortunate not to be reduced to ten men inside five minutes when defender Mark O'Brien only saw yellow for pulling back striker Tyler Walker.

The visitors were fired up and went ahead with the help of home goalkeeper Joe Day, who allowed CJ Hamilton's shot to beat him at his near post.

Logan somehow got down low to his right to scoop striker Jamille Matt's close-range header over the crossbar to ensure the Stags took a slender lead into the break.

Walker should have doubled that lead early in the second half but lost his footing after rounding Day and defender Mickey Demetriou raced back to clear off the line.

Logan then pulled off another remarkable stop, denying Amond from point-blank range after he'd been teed up by Matt.

Logan then blotted his copybook; conceding a penalty after clattering into substitute Adebayo Azeez. He guessed right to keep out Amond's spot-kick but was unable to prevent him from tucking home the rebound.

Summary

This first leg tie could quite easily have finished 3-3 and a draw was fair result. Both sides put in impressive performances in an entertaining contest.
