Falkirk

In

Blair Sneddon (def) (Camelon); Anton Dowds (att) (East Fife); Scott Mercer (def) (Queen of the South); Blair Alston (mid) (Hamilton); Akeel Francis (att) (Grantham); Aidan Keena (att) (Hartlepool); Callumn Morrison (mid) (Hearts);

Out

Michael Doyle (r)(def) (Queen’s Park); Denny Johnstone (att) (Dumbarton); Ian McShane (sp)(mid) (Darvel); Louis Longridge (r)(att) (Queen’s Park); Gregor Buchanan (k)(def) (Queen of the South)

Manager Ray McKinnon was dispatched and replaced by Lee Wallace and David McCracken, who proved to be equally inept but have been retained for the season ahead. Once again, Falkirk will have a squad that is in excess of what most of their rivals will be able to muster, yet they will have to get more from the players who grossly underperformed last time out. Conor Sammon was the greatest culprit in attack, but there is additional competition in that area with the arrival of Anton Dowds, who is playing full-time football for the first time in his career, Akeel Francis and Aidan Keena, the latter two arriving from English football. Meanwhile, what appears to be a strong midfield has been boosted further by the arrival of winger Callumn Morrison from Hearts – a player of at least Championship standard – and Blair Alston, who is in the same category. With Charlie Telfer and Morgaro Gomis available to play centrally, there should be no lack of quality in Falkirk’s side. At the back, meanwhile, they have a strong first XI and are unlikely to see any change in their first-choice defence. They do lack depth in that sector, though, while they are also on the look out for an additional goalkeeper to challenge Robbie Mutch. The foundation, however, should be a strong one, but the managerial quality in the dugout may well hold them back once more. Furthermore, the attitude of the squad needs to be stronger than it was last season, but the management only seemed to compound that issue.

Target

Falkirk should be challenging for the title. Anything less than second would be a huge disappointment.

Season Review
2020/2021

№5: Falkirk

Unquestionably no side suffered as disappointing a campaign as Falkirk, who finished an embarrassing fifth in League One, having been one of the favourites to win the title. Certainly, with the squad that they possessed, they should have finished at least second. Mistakes had started to be made at the end of last season, though. The management duo of Lee Miller and David McCracken, who had proven to be incompetent last term were retained. Initially, with Partick floundering, they were made to look better than they are. Falkirk won six of their opening eight matches of the season, though only two of these came against teams that would finish in the top five, while there was also an ominous 1-1 home draw against a Forfar side that finished bottom. Things started to fall apart shortly before Christmas with a 1-0 loss to Airdrie. Then followed a draw with Airdrie and a loss away to East Fife. It seemed that the shutdown had come at the right time, especially when they started with wins over Montrose and Falkirk. Their fixture list was light compared to some clubs and full-time status should have played into their hands, but a succession of poor results ultimately saw the managers sacked and Gary Holt put in charge. The momentum against Falkirk, though, was too great. They took only one point from their last six matches. They will struggle to reflect on any positives from the campaign. An experienced squad should have achieved far better, with their management teams unable to find a way to unlock packed defences. Big changes should be expected in the summer. The playing staff have shown they cannot be relied upon, while a new manager is required to get Falkirk back to where they should be.
