Football Season Review

№8: Bochum

A solid end to the campaign saw Bochum finish in the top half of the table. The majority of the season was spent in the lower reaches but a number of key loan signings eventually had the desired effect. Manager Robin Dutt was sacked after picking up just 2 points from his first 4 games, it may have seemed a little harsh on 55 year-old but defensively they were all at sea, conceding 10 goals in those opening 4 matches. It took a while for predecessor Thomas Reis to find a winning formula and they continued to flirt with relegation up until the pandemic. Their defensive issues continued to haunt them but going forward they were as good as any, striker Sylvere Ganvoula was the catalyst and scored 13 times over the course of the season. Bochum came back a different side after the restart. January loan signing Vasilios Lampropoulos proved to be a revelation in central defence and formed a good partnership with Maxim Leitsch, while Osei-Tutu, on loan from Arsenal, was to have much more joy as a right winger as opposed to a right-back. They would only lose 1 of their last 9 games after the league resumed and conceded just 6. Bochum will look to build on their strong finish next season but will need reinforcements, a lot of players have reached the end of their contracts and the loan players have all returned to their parent clubs.
