Football Season Review

№16: Nurnberg

A disastrous season for Nurnberg very nearly ended in relegation, a stoppage time goal in the second-leg play-off against FC Ingolstadt saved them from a humiliating drop to the third-tier, something that would have been unthinkable at the start of the campaign. Nurnberg can’t seem to get things right off the pitch as well as on it, Michael Wiesinger was put in temporary charge for the play-offs after Jens Keller was shown the door, he was the fourth man to take the reigns this season and the nineteenth coaching change in 17 years. Keller took over from Damir Canadi in November with results not going well, although there were signs of an improvement after the winter break things gradually got worse. Home form in particular was awful, just 3 wins all season and some right hammerings by the likes of Bielefeld and Stuttgart. There were many games Nurnberg had the better of but a serious lack of creativity going forward would eventually cost them, defensively they were vulnerable, things did improve after the loan signing of Konstantinos Mavrapanos from Arsenal, but, it was still an area of weakness. The emergence of talented youngster Robin Hack was a plus point and he finished top goalscorer with 10. The second highest scorer was defender Asger Sorensen so it’s clear where their main problems lie. Even though Nurnberg retained their place in the second flight they may struggle to hold on to their better players, some serious rebuilding needs to be done in the summer, including making the right managerial appointment.

Player of the Season: Robin Hack
