Football Season Review

№9: Greuther Furth

Greuther Furth secured a top half finish after an impressive season under Stefan Leitl. The Shamrock could have finished higher if it wasn’t for a disappointing end to the campaign. Due to the lack of resources and squad depth Furth were tipped to struggle; however, only 1 defeat from their first 6 altered opinion. Their high press and pace on the counter-attack caused problems for opposition defences. Their form dipped unsurprisingly but they never looked in any real danger of the drop, good wins against Darmstadt, Karlsruher and Stuttgart helped to lift confidence when results weren’t going so well. Branmir Hrgota was a real creative highlight for Leitl’s side, the summer signing from Eintracht Frankfurt notched 10 goals and 4 assists over the course of the season. Youngsters Jamie Leweling, David Raum and Paul Jaekel all made their mark, while Havard Nielsen and Daniel Keita-Ruel had their moments up front. Furth ran out of steam a bit during the run-in, picking up just 1 win in their final 10 matches, home form in particular suffered, losing 5 of their final 8 at the Sportpark Ronhof. In terms of next season Furth will be hoping to break into the top six if possible. They will need to add a few new faces and keep hold of their promising youngsters if they are to do so.
