Football Season Review

№12: Jahn Regensburg

A leaky defence and poor away form resulted in a bottom-half finish for Jahn but maintaining their status in Bundesliga 2 was the first goal and they achieved that. Jahn had their moments over the season but overall they were largely inconsistent. They were never able to win more than 2 in a row and struggled on the road with just 3 away wins in 17 outings. A 7 match unbeaten run between September and November propelled Jahn up to fifth but it was to be short lived, big defeats at Karlsruher and Bielefeld eventually put pay to any hopes of a promotion push. Leading up to the pandemic they found themselves in free fall after 5 defeats from 6 but luckily they were able to regroup and with 2 wins and 5 draws from their last 9 games they survived comfortably. Although boss Mersad Selimbegovic had his team well organised they would often leak goals at the back, an ageing central defensive partnership of Marcel Correia and Sebastian Nachreiner lacked speed at times. Veteran striker Marco Gruttner playing in his last season for the club failed to have the impact of season’s gone by but Andreas Albers and Sebastian Stolze both chipped in with some important goals along the way. Jahn will need to recruit well in the summer otherwise they could struggle next season, the likes of Gruttner and Geipl will need to be replaced and the defence could do with a shake up.
