Football Season Review

№7: Erzgebirge Aue

Ergzebirge had extremely successful season by their standards, with the team having the best home record in the entire division up until round 28. Main reason for the high finish was the form in Aue – didn’t lose home game until February and 11 of their 13 league wins were achieved at home. With safety never in real doubt all season, Erzgebirge even had a few moments they could have dreamt of promotion, but their away results were disappointing. The team spirit and the very good organisation in midfield amongst the main strengths of the team. Also worth praising coach Dirk Schuster, who stepped in charge for round 4 after his predecessor Daniel Meyer resigned suddenly due to family tragedy. Schuster’s ability to be flexible with his selections helped immensely. Since his arrival in the winter centre-back Jacob Rasmussen was the main rock of the defensive line, but the main reason for the high finish was the rebirth of Dimitrij Nazarov. The Azeri forward had very difficult 2018/19 season, but under Schuster he flourished and his goals and assists brought many wins. The main weakness that never got sorted were the 2 flanks, with many players rotating to play as wing-backs, but none of them doing particularly well. Erzgebirge conceded nearly 40% of their goals this campaign after crosses from the flanks. A lot for next season will depend on how badly hit the finances are by COVID, if there are money for 1-2 quality new signings and all important players decide to stay Erzgebirge should be again aiming at a top 9 finish.

Player of the Season: Dimitrij Nazarov
