Football Season Review

№12: Cadiz

Cadiz, having just come up from the second division, were one of the favourites for relegation. However, they had a very good campaign and have finished 12th. Cadiz started very well and were as high as seventh after 12 matchdays. Their defensive style was difficult for many teams to deal with, as they would sit back and counter attack devastatingly. This even earned them early season wins over Barcelona and Real Madrid. The problem for Cadiz was that whenever they did concede the first goal, their coach Alvaro Cervera didn’t have the solutions to mount comebacks. Their way of playing obliged them to score first. But, led by the veteran Alvaro Negredo up front, they often did just that. Cadiz really couldn’t have asked for a better season than this. While this achievement might get lost in the middle of others, for them to have finished 12th when they were expected to be relegated is huge. There weren’t many weaknesses with Cadiz, other than the fact that their squad was limited, as you would expect considering their budget. Cadiz’s summer should be spent on trying to keep the players who did so well for them this year and on bringing in a few specific signings who can bring a little more quality, especially in attack where there was maybe an over-reliance on Negredo. Overall, though, this was a 10/10 season for the newly promoted side.
