Football Season Review

№8: Celta Vigo

Celta Vigo finished 2020/21 really well and came close to taking a European spot, ultimately missing out because of their bad start. They had begun the campaign under Oscar Garcia and underperformed, considering the quality of their squad. In November, with the team in 17th position, they sacked Garcia and hired Eduardo Coudet as their new coach. They immediately improved as he installed a 4-1-3-2 formation that was built around Renato Tapia in defensive midfield, Denis Suarez in attacking midfield and Iago Aspas in attack. The formation worked well, although Celta Vigo did struggle whenever one of these three were missing. Under Coudet, Celta Vigo finished the season really well, but it wasn’t enough for European football. They had the sixth-best record in LaLiga in the matchdays played after his hire in November, though, so there is optimism that they’ll do better when he has a full season. Celta Vigo will hope to strengthen their squad in the summer and sign solid backups for the key players in the very unique positions of Coudet’s system. The fact that Iago Aspas will be another year older, turning 34 this summer, must be a concern as well for the club.
