Football Season Review

№9: Granada CF

Granada had a very long 2020/21 season, one which can ultimately be considered a success. After finishing seventh last year, they qualified for the Europa League but had to start their season very early and go through three qualifying rounds to make the groups. They then went all the way to the quarter-finals of the Europa League, as well as the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey. This took its toll on their league form. It was normal to see Granada drop points the weekend after an intense midweek fixture. Because they had so many matches this season, Granada suffered a lot of injuries and they finished the season poorly, drawing one and losing four of their final five games because they were absolutely burnt out. Granada coach Diego Martinez deserves massive credit for going far in both cup competitions and maintaining enough LaLiga form to comfortably finish mid-table. Last year, for an example, Espanyol couldn’t cope with their demands of Europa League football and ended up relegated. That was never a risk for Granada this year. Granada do have things to improve, though. They conceded the most goals of the entire division this season, with 65 conceded. If they look to strengthen in the transfer market, defence is where they should start.
