Football Season Review

№5: Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad had a very good campaign, finishing fifth in the league and also winning the 2019/20 Copa del Rey final, which was finally played this year after being postponed due to the pandemic. The team started very well in LaLiga and were as high as second place after 13 rounds. They suffered a winter slump, though, as they were heavily impacted by injuries. That saw them drop off in LaLiga and fall in the various cup competitions. But, Real Sociedad still had the 2019/20 Copa del Rey final, which was finally played in April 2021 vs local rivals Athletic. Despite poor form before and after that match, they won the one that mattered, the final, 1-0. By finishing the LaLiga season well, they secured fifth and Europa League football for a second consecutive year. Coach Imanol Alguacil deserves a lot of credit, as does the club’s youth academy. Even though Real Sociedad had a lot of injuries, they always had an academy graduate ready to step in, with Martin Zubimendi and Ander Guevera doing particularly well. Up front, Alexander Isak fired in the goals, scoring 17 in LaLiga this season. Still only 21, he could get even better too. In terms of where there is room for improvement, Real Sociedad will look to be more consistent next season and to avoid the bad stretches of form that they’ve often gotten stuck in these past few years. But, overall, this is a club with a lot to be happy about.
