Football Season Review

№19: Real Valladolid

Real Valladolid had a very disappointing season, which ended in relegation. After their promotion in 2018, they finished 16th and 13th in their first two seasons back up on shoestring budgets. Then, in the summer of 2020, they spent more money than they had in most previous summers, signing quality players like Fabian Orellana and Shon Weissman. But, it didn’t work. Coach Sergio struggled to implement a more attacking style to suit these players, but he did try to and all he achieved was losing the defensive solidity his teams had been known for. In the end, what cost Real Valladolid was the draws as they had 16 draws over the course of the season, the most of all teams. A poor end to the season also cost them, as they didn’t win any of their final 12 matches. It was simply a very poor season from Real Valladolid, who maybe should have moved on from Sergio at some point in the campaign when they realised that he couldn’t utilise the summer signings in the right way. At the end of the season, Sergio was then sacked. So, Real Valladolid are looking for a new coach for life in the second division and they’ll also have to move on from many of the quality players they recently signed.
