Football Season Review

№9: Heracles Almelo

Heracles' season followed the trend of the previous three (10th, 7th and 8th) finishing in 9th position. Perhaps they went slightly beyond expectations, as they had sold some of the best players in the summer, but coach Frank Wormuth once again managed to create a competitive team, always fielding the usual 4-3-3. In truth, things did not work out well right away, the German coach had to change several formations before finding the ideal eleven. The first few months were very worrying, many players were performing less than expected, thus they arrived at the beginning of December with just 9 points from 12 games. Then things definitely changed and between December and early February Heracles had their best moment, collecting 19 points from 9 games. From then on, they alternated between good and bad performances, fighting until the last round for a place in the playoffs. Their stay in the KNVB Cup was very ephemeral, after beating Telstar they were quickly eliminated by Feyenoord. Regarding the individual players, attacking midfielder Rai Vloet, by far Heracles best player this season, stood out, also scoring 16 goals. Much more was expected from striker Sinan Bakis who scored 10 goals, but all concentrated in a few games. Certainly, disappointing the performances of the other forwards, in particular Burgzorg and Szőke. The defense paid for the many injuries that forced Wormuth to change line-up almost every game. Perhaps the most continuous was Italian left-back Giacomo Quagliata.
