Football Season Review

№13: PEC Zwolle

All in all PEC Zwolle had a positive season, they ended in 13th place and especially were never really involved in the relegation struggle. A step forward compared to last season that saw them saved from the league's suspension when they were in 15th position. The club probably hoped for something more, so in February, after some disappointing results, they fired coach John Stegeman and entrusted the team to Art Langeler, who, however, could not accept as he was tied to the federation. At this point there was a lot of confusion, first the team was led by youth coach Leeroy Echteld and then by another youth coach Bert Konterman. The three coaches who have succeeded on the bench have all kept the 4-3-3 as the reference system of play. Perhaps PEC could have achieved something more from this season had it not been for the many injuries suffered by important players, above all Manchester City loanee Tedic and right-back Van Wermeskerken. In particular, the last month was particularly unlucky, as more than half of the team was hit by a Covid-19 outbreak and Konterman was forced to field many substitutes and youngsters at their debut. PEC’s participation in the KNVB Beker was very short as they were eliminated already in the second round by Excelsior, a second tier team. As for the players, what Zwolle missed was in particular a top scorer, just consider that the top scorer was Reza with just 6 goals and that Konterman eventually used a midfielder like Clement in the center-forward position. Many players fell short of expectations, especially Finnish international center-back Lam, who was often disastrous, and all the attackers. Center-backs Van Polen and Nakayama did their job, as did midfielders Saymak and Clement, though neither of them excelled.
