Football Season Review

№15: RKC Waalwijk

RKC Waalwijk's season was positive, few would have bet on their permanence in Eredivisie considering that last season was a complete failure. They were only saved by league's suspension due Covid-19 when they were one step away from the immediate return in Eerste Divisie. Always at the bottom of the table, they never gave the feeling of being competitive. This season they alternated positive streaks of results with sequences of defeats. They started badly with 3 consecutive losses, then another 4 in a row came between the 12th and 15th round and between the 28th and 31st round, the latter creating panic in the team that had been sucked into the fight for relegation. Fortunately, four points in the last 3 rounds were enough for survival...they ended in 15th with same points 16th placed Emmen, but with a better goal difference. Their experience in KNVB Beker was as quick as it was disastrous, eliminated in the first round by second tiers Cambuur. Coach Fred Grim has always fielded the team with the 4-3-3 system of play, except in the games with the three top teams, against whom he resorted to the 5-man defense. As for individual players, coach Grim could take advantage of the solid performances of goalkeeper Lampros, as well as the ones of two reliable central defenders such as Touba and Meulensteen. Also in midfield Tahiri, Anita and Van der Venne guaranteed a lot of quantity, even if not much quality. The biggest problems were in attack, so much that, after relegated ADO Den Haag, RKC were the team that scored the fewest goals, just 33, less than one per game. Top scorers were Stokkers and Ngonge, 5 goals each, while newcomers John and Damascan have completely failed to meet expectations.
