Football Season Review

№11: SV Sandhausen

Sandhausen had another solid mid-table season and coach Kocak was praised for the way he coped with all the injury issues that hurt the team all throughout. Signing many free agents for no fees in the summer proved the right move as from early in the season they were needed to help after injuries started disrupting the selection. The main winger Wooten picked up a knee issue in round 2 and remained absent right until April, captain Kulovits had two long spells out, several times three of the regulars in defence had to miss at the same time, but despite all that Sandhausen never allowed themselves to feel sorry for themselves and they competed hard in every match. Five wins and just two defeats in the opening nine rounds established White and Blacks in the top half of the table and this strong start to the campaign proved important as it compensated for the five defeats suffered in the next seven rounds. 2017 was finished with back-to-back 3:1 home wins and this saw Sandhausen welcoming the winter break in the top eight. Knipping enjoyed solid first season as a regular in the heart of the defence, midfielders Jansen and Forster got much more playing time than expected due to the injuries and they did well, the only winter signing Gislason was a major success, he played in five different positions in 2018, but probably the most consistent performer was Karl, who was not even expected to start a lot, but due to injuries he provided invaluable cover both in midfield and in defence. 2018 brought mixed results and only 3 wins in 16 matches, but the key draws when they were needed against teams sitting below Sandhausen and the good first part of the season never saw White and Blacks threatened by relegation. Despite sliding out of the top half of the rankings come the end of the season the main goal of surviving was achieved as early as round 30 and just this should rate the season as a success.
