In 2021, Atlético GO improved the previous season decent performance and managed to hold a top-half table position in the end. With a fairly modest squad, at first sight, Atlético managed to keep a very steady run from beginning to end, especially in the end, when Dragão held a sequence of 8 games without losing, closing the season with 4 straight wins. In 2022, Atlético fulfilled their obligations by reaching the finals of State Championship, where they convincingly defeated their arch-rivals Goiás on both legs. They have also won the two cup matches they have played so far. Umberto Louzer is the new man in charge (arrived in February). His biggest achievement was a Série B title with Chapecoense in 2020. No success in Série A, so far. He has been employing a straight-forward 4231 formation, with a few creative units in attack. Having lost Fernando Miguel in goal, ‘Dragão’ Ronaldo and Renan for the position, but it seems that last season’s replacement Luan Polli will be the main man for stopping opponent’s shots. Youngsters Hayner (right-back) and Noga (centre-back) are expected to make an impact during the season, but for now Dudu and Wanderson are the references at the back. It seems that there is some shortage of quality units for defensive roles, especially after the departure of last season’s leader Éder Ferreira. In midfield, things look better, as there have been three exciting returns for 2022: holding midfielder Édson, playmaker Jorginho and attacking midfielder Wellington Rato. Shaylon is also an exciting new signing, but he has failed to prove his talent in the last 2 or 3 years. Marlon Freitas will remain the anchor of the team, this season. Barcía is a big name new signing, but he has struggled to find his best physical shape after a longterm injury in 2021. Former Grêmio young winger Leo Pereira has been the reference so far, and he looks ready to make an impact. However, there’s clearly a lack of a proper striker, since Dellatorre left just a couple of months after having been signed to lead Dragão’s attack.

Target

Main concern will be to get out of trouble zone as soon as possible. May struggle to repeat a top half position, this time.
