Avaí granted access to Série A only in the last round, when they picked a highly celebrated comeback win with two late goals. Forwards Lourenço and Getúlio were the man in form that helped Avaí the most in the successful 2021 season. Very poor performance so far in 2022. Eliminated both from Campeonato Catarinense in quarter-finals (where they are always the biggest favourites) and Brazilian Cup (against very modest team Ceilândia). Only 3 wins in the 16 games played so far; all 16 games against teams from lower divisions. Coach Eduardo Barroca arrived in February after the absolute failure of Avaí under Claudinei Oliveira. However, the team hasn’t improved with Barroca at the helm (2 wins, 3 draws and 3 defeats), who will start Série A season already under pressure. Douglas was signed to be the owner of the goal, this season. At 39, last season's no. 1 Gledson should be just a reserve. Alemão, new signing Bressa, youngster Arthur Chaves and natural midfielder Raniele are the main options for the centre of defence; none has been completely convincing. The team will miss the leadership from Betão, who finished his career at the club in March. Experienced Bruno Cortez arrived for the left side (better in attack than in defence); former Chapecoense’s Matheus Ribeiro should be the man for the right. Bruno Silva and Jean Cléber will have another chance to make an impact in top flight. Eduardo has been one of the very few new signings that have been on a good level. Muriqui arrived from China and has been one of the main references in the attacking moves. Winger Lourenço departed in March, as the club didn’t extend his contract, quite inexplicably, since he was arguably one of the teams better talents. Therefore, Copete will be the main reference in attack. The Colombian has been on his best shape since arriving in Brazil in 2016. Avaí has just signed with Bissoli, who is expected to be the main striker for the season.

Target

Highly expected to struggle this season. Possibly the strongest candidate for relegation.
