Augsburg fell well below expectations last season, finishing just above the bottom three following inconsistent performances despite a change in management just before the enforced break due to the pandemic. Heiko Herrlich will be hoping for a better outcome in his first full season in charge of the club but Augsburg are in severe need for reinforcements. They will be heading into the new campaign without two of their key players with Daniel Baier retiring while Philipp Max has been sold to PSV Eindhoven. Augsburg have converted Felix Uduokhai's loan deal into a permanent move while also bringing in Tobias Strobl and Daniel Caligiuri on free transfers. Their only other outlay so far in the transfer market has been Robert Gumny's arrival from Lech Poznan who will be looking to make the right back position his own with Tin Jedvaj returning back to Bayer Leverkusen at the end of his loan spell. With a weaker defense and with no reliable back-up for Alfred Finnbogason, there are still holes to be plugged for Augsburg ahead of the new campaign and they will do well to stay clear of the relegation zone.

Target

Safety remains the minimum expected of Herrlich ahead of the new season and, unless Augsburg bring in more bodies before the transfer window shuts, they will have to be at their best to achieve it.
