Freiburg just missed out on European football by a point but can be pleased with the progress they have made, finishing in the top half of the table for the first time in three seasons. Keeping the squad together from the previous season and a strong start to the campaign were the key to their high finish. Manager Christian Streich, now into his ninth year in charge of the club will be facing a tough test to try and repeat the success of last season. Three of his top players, Waldschmidt, Koch and Schwolow have all moved on and that is bound to have an effect. He will be hoping new striker Demirovic, brought in from Alaves, can hit the ground running. Attacking midfielder Gus Til has also joined on loan from Spartak Moscow and may bring some extra creativity they need. One of Freiburg’s strengths last season was their efficiency and organisation and that is something which is likely to be evident again this season. The area of concern will be going forward where they could struggle, last-term they were one of the lowest scorers in the top half of the table and it’s difficult to see much of a change this time around.

Target

Top half- Having lost key men in the close season it’s possible that Freiburg could struggle, but with a seasoned coach in Streich it’s unlikely that they will get sucked into any relegation danger.
