In their debut top flight campaign AVS experienced pain and jubilation but ultimately they survived. Avoided direct relegation only on the final day of the season. Stayed above Farense only thanks to their better H2H stats. All this despite having the worst defence, 60 goals conceded in 34 games, and the fewest wins of any team – 5. It turned out the equal-highest number of draws (12) was precious for staying outside the bottom 2. AVS then dominated in the survival playoff vs Vizela and triumphed 5-2 on aggregate to secure their second year in the top flight. Changed 2 managers last season. Did the same in the summer. Jose Mota is the new HC. Many of the regulars from the previous campaign left, a lot of them were at the club only on loan. AVS haven’t been very active in adding new players so far. This will likely change in late August when an influx of loanees are likely to join the ranks. The main strengthening so far had been in midfield. All of Algobia, Lima and Barbosa have the potential to become cornerstone players. Paraguayan striker Duarte is also an interesting new player. He’s young and will be learning a lot from eternal captain Nene. Despite his 42 years Nene remains the main hope up front. Yet to make major moves defensively and this is a serious concern. Had the worst defence last season so unless at least 2-3 quality new players arrive soon AVS could be struggling again.

Target

The only goal once more is to stay out of the bottom 3.
