Paul Simpson enhanced his reputation as a Carlisle United hero after guiding them to an unlikely promotion last season. They were heading for the National League when he was appointed manager, almost in desperation, back in March 2022. Fast forward 15 months and the Cumbrians were celebrating promotion to League One at Wembley after beating Stockport County in a penalty shoot-out in the League Two play-off final. His calm and assured manner has given the club some much needed stability, with rumbling ownership and financial issues proving awkward for his predecessors. Location has always made it tricky to attract the better players but he has got his recruitment spot on. He discovered a real gem in midfield playmaker Owen Moxon, who was battling in Scottish League Two with Annan Athletic. Moxon played a key role in their success and keeping hold on him will be key to the Cumbrians chances of staying in League One next season. Striker Kristian Dennis is the only notable loss this summer, having finished as leading goalscorer last season, yet he wasn’t a regular in the final couple of months of the campaign. Replacing those goals remains Simpson’s priority, having strengthened his squad in other positions. Dylan McGeouch impressed during his short spell with relegated Forest Green Rovers whilst Danny Butterworth will be hoping to establish himself following a couple of loan spells whilst with Blackburn Rovers. Sam Lavelle also needs to find a home following a disappointing couple of years at Charlton Athletic. The Cumbrians have stability, continuity and momentum, and it gives them cause for optimism this season.

Target

Survival. If they can find a goalscorer and keep hold of Moxon, they have a good chance of consolidating their place in League One.
