Wigan Athletic were poor in 2022/23. Points deductions didn't help their case, though those off-field issues seemed to effect the on-field performances. The club look to turn over a new leaf as they begin life in League One, though Wigan Athletic will start this season eight points behind the rest of the pack after failing to meet funding deadlines again. This is a less-than-ideal start for The Latics. Manager Maloney remains in place after being given the job in January. He has overseen major changes to the dressing room. First-teamers were always going to leave after the drop-down in division, though they have been replaced with quality. Clare brings League One pedigree from Charlton, as does midfielder Smith. Morrison and Balagizi add major talent to the ranks, as does Watts. McManaman returns to Wigan for a second stint. All will add something to this squad. Major player turnover is never easy to overcome in the early stages. If Wigan Athletic can speed up the settling in process for these new players, who will all be expected to contribute, they could be in for a good season, assuming the off-field distractions are a thing of the past. The Latics have only played two pre-season games so far, though they've failed to score in both. This could be something to keep an eye on as pre-season continues.
