Grêmio is back to Série A, after the humiliating relegation in 2021. Tricolor Gaúcho is one of the biggest teams in the country, and simply couldn't afford to spent one more year away from top flight football, so they put out a strong performance in 2022, finishing 2nd, just behind the other big team Cruzeiro. Grêmio won Campeonato Gaúcho for the 6th time in a row, on the weekend before starting their return season to Série A, picking a narrow win over Caxias on the final. They have also played two rounds of Brazilian cup, having picked solid wins in both times. Renato Gaúcho returned to Grêmio, last season, and will now try to bring Grêmio back to their best days in top flight division. Renato is expected to implement a narrow 4-2-3-1 formation, since he doesn't have many good options for the wings, especially after Ferreira's injury. Grêmio picked one of the most important signings of Brazilian football in recent years: absolute big name Luis Suarez arrived with still a lot of football to offer. Pepê, Vina, Cristaldo, Carballo and Reinaldo are all very important additions for the new season. Full-back João Pedro will have another chance after several disappointing experiences with Bahia, Corinthians and FC Porto. Grêmio's attacking midfielders are abundant and they all have quality. They were all brought to provide decent support to their biggest weapon of the season: the sensational Luis Suarez. The team continues showing some fragilities at the back, especially when exposed to quick counters. The defensive set pieces have also been a problem.

Target

Grêmio isn't expected to immediately assume a title application. It is more realistic to expect them to fight for a place in Libertadores.
