Grêmio’s 2025 season was one of mid-table stability and mixed results. They finished 9th in Série A, missing out on Copa Libertadores qualification but securing a Copa Sul-Americana place for 2026. In Brazilian Cup they were eliminated in the third round, while in the Copa Sul-Americana they exited in the knockout play-offs. Young winger Alysson, striker Carlos Vinícius and club idol Arthur were the best units of 2025. If we consider that the first didn't start the season as a first option and the other two were mid-season new signings, we can immediately understand how poor and irregular was Grêmio's season. Portuguese Luís Castro is the new gaffer for 2026, and the expectations couldn't be higher. He is considered the strongest new signing for the new season, as now one has forgotten what he achieved at Botafogo just a couple of years ago. He likes a possession game, but a sustainable one, as he isn't attracted by romantic, unrealistic game ideas. He is known for his highly efficient and innovative training methods. Castro's signing is the strongest statement by the new board for the new season. Aside from the Portuguese gaffer, bringing the titled goalkeeper Weverton is also a sign that the club will try to achieve something in 2026. Caio Paulista and Tetê should be important options for the course of the season and Enamorado is a possible surprise in attack. Rising star Alysson left after some months of brilliancy in last season. There wasn't even time for him to become a fan favourite. Jemerson is another relevant departure, weakening the back. Striker Carlos Vinícius is the man for goals in current squad. He had a great 2025 season and started 2026 on a better shape. The most valuable unit is Arthur Melo, in midfield, and it will be absolutely crucial to have the entire season, which can be difficult since his loan contract terminates in June.

Target

Aim for a top-8 position, provided Luís Castro stays on board. If there's no patience and the board brings someone else, they should struggle to be in the top-12.
