Gothenburg were one of the more pleasant surprises in 2019 with attractive expansive football under their young manager keeping the side inside the top 10 all campaign. Even the mid-season departure of 4 regulars didn’t affect displays that much. The team’s financial difficulties for the past 15 years are well recorded, but at least the COVID outbreak made most other teams troubled by money too. Gothenburg used to having small squad and relying on many teenagers from their own Academy, with this likely to give them advantage. In the off season 2 major departures happened – main inner midfielder Sebastian Eriksson and potent striker Lasse Vibe left. Former replaced well by veteran Farnerud, while in attack no new signings were made, but talented Lagemyr is fit again and he will be carrying the forward burden together with Soder. It’s very likely that the entire main starting line-up will be consisted of players that were already in the squad last season. Also expectations are for at least 5-6 teenagers to make senior debuts in 2020 as Gothenburg will have to rely on them for rotation. Kharaishvili’s creativity and the blistering speed of both Sana and Aiesh amongst the main strengths of the team. Gothenburg expected to be very dangerous on counterattack. The lack of depth is seen as the main issue, with no major reinforcements likely to be signed throughout the campaign due to the money problems.

Target

Aim is to stay out of trouble and another comfortable mid-table finish likely. Don’t have the depth to challenge for more.
