Football Season Guide

Genk had a dismal last season. Never climbed higher than 6th place, spent only 2 of the 30 rounds in the top 6. With the campaign going nowhere coach Fink was sacked right before Christmas. His replacement Nicky Hayen had just lost his job at Club Brugge when he took over. Despite the more goals scored under Hayen the overall form didn’t improve much. Genk still won Play-off II, 4 wins, 5 draws and a single defeat. However, in the decisive clash against KAA Gent for the last visa for Europe lost on penalties. Hayen left for a job in England at the end of the season. The ex-Anderlecht coach Thorup is now in charge. The Dane preaches modern football and often changes formations based on the opponents. Genk not playing in Europe could benefit them immensely this season in the league. There are many quality players in the squad. No major departures have happened so far. On top of that two great new additions have been made. The main issue last season was the flat attack. Not a reliable 10+ goalscorer was present and not enough good chances were created. The arrivals of prolific striker Rafiu and the league’s second-most big chances created playmaker Erenbjerg pretty much takes care of that. The main group remains the same and with the expected improved scoring record and no midweek distractions in Europe Genk could be dreaming big again this season.
