Football Season Guide

Had a good last year. Existed almost entirely in mid-table. Finished the regular season in 9th place. Mixed 4 wins with 5 defeats in the 10 play-off games so never in real contention to win Play-off II. Overall the aggressive tactics made the fans happy. Scored some good goals. However, their main strength was the ability to keep clean sheets. Goalkeeper Andreas Jungdal was second in the entire league with his 14 shut downs. It has been a summer of major changes. Already, 6 of the regular starters from last season have been sold. Cashing in while the players are on demand is a way for Westerlo to ensure their financial stability. No area of the pitch hasn’t been weakened. Reno Münz was signed to be new regular starter in defence. If he can link-up with star Kimura well Westerlo should still have solidity inside the box. Lost both their main full-backs in the winter and this summer. Also, the main anchor-man Piedfort is a big loss. Adding full-backs from teams that finished dead-last in their respected leagues [Ferraro (Dender) and Flø (Vejle)] doesn’t shout improvement. Top goalscorer Ferri was also sold. Norman Bassette was loaned in so he should be leading the attack. He is good enough to match Ferri’s goal tally. There could be a lot more chances too for 18-year-old Afonso Patrão, arrived late last February. The squad’s much weaker and maintaining the same level of performances and results might be hard.
