Returning to the Serie A after just 1 year in Serie B, last season Sassuolo obtained a very quiet safety, finishing 11th, just 1 point below the top 10 but 15 points above the relegation zone. Their campaign had started slightly poorly as they lost 3 out of the initial 4 games but they soon straightened the ship and even made the top 10 come late November. They went winless between weeks 15 and 21 and were outstanding between the end of January and the beginning of March. For a moment they dreamt of a European finish but then they ran out of power and closed the campaign losing the last 3. Coach Fabio Grosso, the architect of their last 2 seasons, was lured away by Fiorentina and so they hired Alberto Aquilani, coming off a great season at Catanzaro, where he came close to promotion to the Serie A. Sassuolo tried to maintain the back-bone of the squad untouched over the summer and they started doing it by signing starting goalie Muric permanently. Starting centre-back Muharemovic, though, who was impressive with his performances, was sold to Leeds United for a great sum of money. And he was not replaced yet, while Cande is still recovering from a serious knee injury. Most of last season, Sassuolo fielded centre-back Walukiewicz at right-back and they should keep doing so as he was hired permanently from Torino and his deputy Coulibaly returned to his parent club. At left-back, Garcia, who was like a starter at some point, also saw his loan come to an end. This leaves them with Doig as the sole reliable left-back, with Pieragnolo just back from injury. The midfield saw no changes but an alternative to aging Matic is needed. On the other hand, in the attack, they lost back-up striker Nzola while key Pinamonti could be leaving and so they hired Bowie, one of the few decent players last season at Hellas Verona. Moreover, they also hired on loan attacking midfielder Adzic and winger Dominguez from Juventus and Bologna respectively.
