Not only failed to defend their title but even missed the play-offs. Finished eighth, full 8 points outside the top 6. This was not a bad outcome considering that in 11 of the opening 16 rounds Sydney were in last place. Inability to score goals, injuries to some key players, and badly constructed squad that relied too much on players age 16 and 17 led to this dismal campaign. The Sky Blues remain the most decorated team in women’s football in Australia – 5-time champions and 6-time runner-ups in their 18 years of existence. Despite the dismal previous season coach Juric returns for his eight consecutive year in charge, he is the longest-serving manager in the A-League. It was inevitable that the summer will be about revamping the squad. Sydney’s record-appearance maker Ibini-Isei was sold. She lost her scoring touch last year so this is not a bad move. Another main striker to leave was American Connors, she had multiple injury issues and was simply not available enough. Replaced them with a trio of forwards from the States. All of Ulkekul, Tanner and Moise should be often used. They will have to show they can improve Sydney’s scoring record. Will have a new number one on goal too. American Heather Hinz is an experienced player. Tiahna Robertson was added as her back-up. She is a good goalie too. The other two main new signings were that of centre-back Ayson and the main playmaker of the reigning champions Mariners Galic. Both of them will be regular starters. Galic is expected to form a formidable partnership with main chance-creator Mackenzie Hawkesby. She missed most of last season injured but when she played Sydney looked impressive. Keeping her healthy and available is the number one goal for the managerial staff.

Target

Return to the play-offs is the primary goal.
