Stadium | When Red Bull started their project with RB Leipzig, the Zentralstadion in Leipzig had no tenant, so they moved in in 2010 and renamed it the Red Bull Arena. The 43,000-capacity ground had been built in 2004 ahead of the 2006 World Cup and is a modern arena. At first, RB Leipzig struggled to draw spectators as their project was a new one and they were playing in the lower leagues. But, as they moved up the German footballing pyramid and reached the Bundesliga, attendances really started to grow and they now average around 40,000 fans per game, which isn’t far off the capacity. Given many German football fans’ disdain for the RB Leipzig model, many boycott the club and this means the away section at the Red Bull Arena is often close to empty. |
Recent History | RB Leipzig is a club like no other in the Bundesliga. Founded in 2009 when Red Bull acquired the playing rights of fifth-tier side SSV Markranstädt, they have thrived in recent years thanks to the huge investment from the energy drink company, which has made this a hated club for many fans of other German clubs. Success came even quicker than planned as they secured four promotions in seven years to make it to the top tier. Their first ever season in the Bundesliga was in 2016/17 and that was a special campaign too as they finished second, qualifying for the Champions League. They’ve reached Europe every year since and have become a legitimate title contender. As much as the investment has helped, it has to be said that RB Leipzig’s success is also based on smart decision-making. They’ve had money, sure, but they’ve spent it wisely and have built an excellent scouting system, have recruited well and have massively improved the academy. |
