Stadium | Son Moix is already a difficult place for teams to go given the geography of Real Mallorca being on an island, but the stadium itself adds something to the home side. Even though it’s got a running track that dilutes the atmosphere and even though it’s not always full, Real Mallorca have traditionally had a huge home advantage at this unique venue. There’s just something about this bowl-shaped ground. Its capacity is 23,000 and they do a good job of funnelling the most vocal fans into the same section just behind one of the goals. There is even talk of installing a similar section behind the other goal, which is currently far away from any fans – apart from the unique VIP area in the corner. Even though the ground was only opened in 1999, they are even planning a 40,000-seater stadium in the future that will target the tourists of the island. |
Recent History | Real Mallorca have traditionally been a top-tier club. From 1997 to 2013, they were in the top tier non-stop and they even won the Copa del Rey in 2003. Yet Real Mallorca were relegated at the end of the 2012/13 season and they fell all the way down to the third tier of Spanish football. They responded well to that with back-to-back promotions in 2017/18 and 2018/19 under the coaching of Vicente Moreno. These promotions also came under new ownership. A consortium led by Robert Sarver, owner of NBA team Phoenix Suns, bought the club and they’ve attracted some top football and business minds such as Maheta Molango, Steve Nash, Andy Kohlberg, Stuart Holden and Graeme Le Saux. |
