Stadium | During the 1920s Sassuolo played their home games in a ground in Via Roma and then moved to another in Località La Pista. Between the end of the 1920s and 1972, their home was a sports centre in Piazza Risorgimento. In 1972 they moved to the Stadio Enzo Ricci, a small venue with a capacity of 4,008. The stadium was characterised by a covered grandstand and removable north and south stands which were iron in structure. Since this Stadium did not meet the required standard when they were promoted to Serie B in 2008, Sassuolo had to move to neighbouring Modena, 20 km away. It was there that they rented the Stadio Alberto Braglia from the local authority. With their historical promotion to Serie A in 2013, they moved to Reggio Emilia some 27 km away and began to play their home games in the Stadio Città del Tricolore. In time the arena was bought by the club and re-named The Mapei Stadium, the name of the owner’s company. Sassuolo completely relaid the pitch at The Mapei adopting a hybrid mix of natural and artificial grass. In due course this solution was shelved and an all natural grass surface laid in its place. |
Recent History | Founded in 1920, Sassuolo have spent most of their life in the semi-professional or amateur tiers of Italian football. They only reached Serie C1 in 2005-2006. 2 years later they achieved promotion to Serie B, with Massimo Allegri at the helm. After 5 Serie B campaigns, characterised by 2 defeats in the promotion playoffs, Sassuolo eventually made it to Serie A. Eusebio Di Francesco was the architect of their success putting together a side that was not only capable of results, but at the same time played spectacular football. After 2 stuttering seasons, Sassuolo qualified for Europe in 2015-2016 thanks to a 6th place finish. Subsequent campaigns failed to see them reach such heights with the top 10 proving illusive. |
