Stadium | It was 1936 when Girondins de Bordeaux started playing their home games between Parc Suzon, in Talence, and Stade Adrien Marquet, the latter now known as Stade Galin. A year later having become the French Amateur Champions, they decided to find themselves a new, bigger home, more suited to their new professional status. As a result Bordeaux moved to the Stade de Chartrons, which was inaugurated in 1938. The team would play there and also at The Parc Lescure, which was built in 1924 and redeveloped for the World Cup in 1938. In 1958, Girondins moved to The Parc Lescure for good. The Stadium was the first ever to be fully covered without the need of pillars. It underwent further renovations in 1987 for the World Cup in 1998, and, after being re-christened Chaban-Delmas in 2001. Once it was declared a site of “Heritage of the XX Century”, further redevelopment and improvement became too complicated in terms of planning permission. Thus, in 2015 a new stadium was inaugurated. The Stade Matmut-Atlantique was built for the UEFA European Championship 2016. With a capacity of 42,000, it meets all the UEFA requirements and can also host concerts and international games. |
Recent History | First crowned French Champions in 1950, they are the only team to ever obtain the title right after being promoted from the second tier. Girondins de Bordeaux enjoyed a golden period between 1979 and 1990 when, under president Claude Bez, they won 3 France Championships, finished second 3 times, won 3 Coupe de France and also made the UEFA Champions League and Cup Winners’ Cup semifinals. The Bez reign ended due to a financial crisis which cost them relegation for administrative reasons. Bordeaux immediately returned to the top flight and would make headlines again in 1995-1996, when they lost the UEFA Cup final to Bayern Munich. In 1998-1999 they won the highest prize in the French game and their 5th Ligue 1 title. In the first decade of the 2000s Bordeaux won 3 Coupe de La Ligue, 2 Trophée des Champions and, in 2008-2009 another French title. 1 more Coupe de France would be lifted in 2012-2013, but this was followed by a period of relative mediocrity. In 2018 the club ended up in the hands of an American investment fund. Unfortunately for fans this meant limitations on investment and a short term outlook. |
