Stadium | Since their foundation, Toulouse FC have been playing their home games in the Stadium Municipal, now known as Stadium de Toulouse. Its construction started in 1937, as the local authority planned to have it ready for the World Cup 1938. Unfortunately those aspirations were never realised and it was only finished in 1949. At the time it was known as “Little Wembley”, as it vaguely resembled the London stadium. The stadium underwent one major renovation in 1997 in preparation for the World Cup in 1998. Improvements saw its capacity increased to 36,500. In 2001 an explosion at a nearby factory caused serious damage to the stadium. As a result 6 months of repairs were required and Toulouse had to play their home games in the Stade Ernest-Wallon. In 2005 giant digital screens were installed and concrete seats were replaced by plastic ones bearing the white and violet colours of TFC. More upgrades were made for the European Championship in 2016 including the installation of a hybrid playing surface. New regulations of the time meant that the capacity was reduced to 33,000. |
Recent History | Toulouse FC came into being in 1970 and reached Ligue 1 for the first time in 1982. Somewhat surprisingly they finished in the top 3, 3 times in 5 seasons. They played their first European football in 1986-1987. A less successful era followed and having flirted with relegation for a period, they eventually dropped out of the top tier in 1993-1994. The following decade was characterised by promotion and relegation. A fall to the Championnat National came about following bankruptcy in 2000-2001. Toulouse returned to Ligue 1 in 2003-2004 and obtained 3rd and 4th placed finishes in 2006-2007 and 2008-2009 respectively. With that success came participation in the Champions League preliminary round on one occasion. |
