Football Season Review

№7: Albion Rovers

Albion Rovers endured a season of contrasting form. A disastrous start saw them in a struggle with Brechin and Cowdenbeath to avoid bottom place. However, an overhaul of the squad in mid-season saw them complete the second half of the campaign in much better form and finish 7th. At the end of March and 12 fixtures into the season, Rovers had a deeply unimpressive record of W2 D1 L9. However, in the remaining 10 fixtures they produced a far more respectable run of W5 D3 L2 and comfortably avoided a relegation scare. Key to success in the second half of the season was a squad overhaul that introduced a wealth of experience to their ranks. The defence was strengthened by Gallacher, McGowan and Sideserf. In attack Stevenson grasped the chance to prove he was not too old to contribute. Home form was problematic with only 2 wins at Cliftonhill. Rovers only scored 8 goals in their 11 home fixtures. They were more effective on the road with Aitken finishing as top scorer with 10 goals. Albion Rovers set out to improve on their 9th place finish the season before. That aim was achieved but it took some drastic recruitment to pull them up to 7th. Rovers began their recruitment for the new season early. They are aiming for experience and quality rather than quantity. If they can maintain the form seen in the second half of the season, then the play-offs are within their reach.
