Football Season Review

№8: Annan Athletic

Annan were another team that suffered a horrible start to the season with only 2 wins in their opening 16 matches (W2 D5 L9). Along with the others, except Brechin, they recovered and ended the season on form with only 1 defeat in their last 6 matches (W3 D2 L1). Two away wins in their opening 5 fixtures suggested Annan were heading in the right direction. However, home form was awful, and they were without a win there until April with the season heading into the closing stages. With 6 matches remaining, Annan suddenly found form with consecutive wins at home over Brechin (3-0) and Stenhousemuir (5-1). With Brechin remaining in poor form, Annan were safe from any relegation fears. In a forgettable season, Wallace finished as top scorer with 5 goals. Annan failed to score in 9 of their 22 matches, but in contrast they scored 3 or more goals on 4 occasions. Annan had hoped to be promotion play-off contenders, but instead for most of the season they were trying to avoid 10th place. They survived but overall, it was hardly impressive as they fielded 28 players over the season. Despite a poor season, manager Peter Murphy has signed a 2-year contract extension and fresh recruitment has begun. Several of the squad have been retained with better performances expected in the forthcoming season.
