Football Season Review

№9: Cowdenbeath

Cowdenbeath were rarely out of the bottom 3 positions. Their focus was to stay ahead of Brechin City and avoid relegation – a task they achieved with only 1 defeat in their last 5 fixtures of the season (W2 D2 L1). Only 1 win in their first 7 matches left Cowdenbeath battling with Brechin to stay off the bottom. Form did not improve after the league suspension with no wins in 6 matches (D2 L4). But fortunately, Brechin were just as poor. Home form was marginally better than away form. Cowdenbeath failed to score in 50% of their matches and only scored 15 goals during the season. A reflection of this was that several players were joint top scorer with only 2 goals each. When it mattered Cowdenbeath took 4 points from 6 against Brechin, although Brechin triumphed 2-0 when they were already doomed. Cowdenbeath began the season with the aim of avoiding finishing in 10th place. With a few bumps along the way they achieved their aim. By the end of the season, they were comfortably out of danger and looking towards next season. With Brechin relegated to the Highland League and ambitious Kelty Hearts entering League Two, Cowdenbeath are facing another tough season. Mounting a title challenge is highly unlikely as are their promotion play-off hopes.
