Football Season Review

№2: FC Edinburgh

Edinburgh City had a strong season and reached the play-offs. They defeated Elgin City to reach the final with Dumbarton, but they froze when it mattered most and remain in League Two. Edinburgh had an indifferent start to their season with 3 defeats in their opening 5 matches. When the league was suspended in December, they were in a bunch of clubs already fighting for 2nd place behind Queen’s Park. Manager James McDonaugh moved upstairs to become sporting director with former Queen of the South manager Gary Naismith becoming manager as the league restarted. Edinburgh only dropped 2 points in their next 7 matches. Edinburgh had no problems scoring and finished on 40 goals – only 3 less than Queen’s Park. Josh Campbell, on loan from Hibs, finished the season as top scorer (7 goals) with Liam and Brian Henderson not far behind (5 goals each). Home form was a problem though, with a mediocre record of W5 D1 L5. Edinburgh only kept 2 clean sheets at home in 11 matches. With the rest of League Two, Edinburgh were always going to be chasing Queen’s Park. Finishing 2nd was a success but failing to overcome a struggling Dumbarton in the play-offs is a notable failure. There is no full-time in League two next season, so there is no reason why Edinburgh should not be aiming for the title and automatic promotion.
