Football Season Review

№4: Stranraer

Stranraer’s win on the last day of the season took them to 4th place on goal difference and into the play-offs. They matched League One Dumbarton all the way, but a solitary goal over 2 legs brought their season to an end. One point from their opening 3 matches put Stranraer’s credentials in doubt. They recovered and were undefeated in their next 7 matches (W5 D2 L0) until the COVID-enforced league suspension. Stranraer struggled as the league resumed with only 1 win in 5 matches. However, a run of 4 consecutive wins without conceding a goal brought hopes of finishing in 2nd place. They dropped points in the run-in and settled for 4th. Tommy Orr finished as top scorer with 8 goals, with Ruari Paton (6) and Darryl Duffy (5) not far behind. Greg Fleming monopolised the goalkeeping position with 24 consecutive starts in the league and play-offs. After relegation from League One the previous season, Stranraer had hopes of bouncing straight back up. They showed patches of consistency during the season, but when it mattered most, against Dumbarton, they failed to score a goal. With no full-time team in the league next season, Stranraer will be looking towards a sustained title challenge. With Steve Farrell, they have the manager to lead them back to League One.
