Football Season Review

№14: Augsburg

If the first few weeks of the season were anything to go by, novelty side Augsburg would have bounced straight back to the lower division. It wasn’t until their 9th match into the season that the promoted side recorded their first ever victory in the top flight in Mainz. It was still a struggle afterwards with Augsburg and Freiburg tending to share bottom slot in the league. However, credit to team coach Luhukay for steering the minnows to safety quite comfortably in the end with seven points to spare over the relegation play-off slot. The bad news is that their team coach resigned just after the final match despite beating Hamburg 1-0. If Luhukay’s side were out of their depth in the early season, they certainly gave as good as they got against some of the top teams in the latter part. Augsburg held Schalke and just failed to hold Bayern in Munich losing narrowly 1-2. With the vast experience of Simon Jentzsch in goal , Langkamp in defence and Callsen-Bracker in midfield, Augsburg have something to build on for next season. In any event, it’s unlikely they’ll get tailed off early on as was the case directly after their promotion

Player of the Season: Simon Jentzsch
