Football Season Review

№5: FC Heidenheim

Enjoyed memorable season, best campaign in over 30 years, that saw them miss out on top 3 finish by just 2 points and also reaching the German Cup quarterfinals where narrowly beaten 4:5 by giants Bayern. Coach Schmidt was in his twelfth year in charge of the team, plus captain Schnatterer was once again Mr. Reliable in his tenth season in Blue and Red. With minimal changes to the personnel in the summer and no change in the style of play Heidenheim expectedly made solid start, they lost just 3 of their opening 13 games (5 wins and 5 draws). Glatzel was on fire early in the season, he scored 7 goals in the first 9 rounds, but then injury saw him miss 10 games and this was when Heidenheim struggled most. Once Glatzel was fit again in early spring the goals started coming with regularity again, but 2 vital slip ups at home late in the season proved costly (1:2 home loss vs. Jahn in round 24 and 2:3 home loss vs. Sandhausen in round 32). The main issues were in defence, with Heidenheim never really finding stability at the back all season. Going forward it was different story and all of Glatzel, Dovedan and Thomalla had solid campaigns. Inner midfielder Dorsch was even better than them in terms of overall importance and Heidenheim might struggle to keep him in the squad with 6 top flight teams already making offers for his services. If as expected the long-serving manager stays Heidenheim are unlikely to make any dramatic changes to their squad and after being so close to promotion this term the players will be eager to do even better next season.
