Football Season Review

№13: Greuther Furth

After a promising start, it turned into another mid-table finish for Greuther Furth. The Bavarian outfit were second in October, but their form dramatically declined which saw them dragged into the relegation fight. Nevertheless, they survived comfortably with three games remaining. Damir Burić’s side hit the ground running with only one defeat in their opening ten games. After victory at Arminia Bielefeld they were second with them solid at the back and creative in the final third. However, the goals soon dried up and they started to leak goals. Their downfall in form accumulated in the sacking of Buric after conceding six at Paderborn. Stefan Leitl came in and did a good job to steady the ship. They regained some defensive shape with a structured 4-1-4-1 formation, however, goals continued to be issue with Daniel Keita-Ruel their leading goal scorer with only ten. Two emerging talents over the season were David Atanga and Fabian Reese, but both were on loan. It is important Furth can resign these players if they want to be successful next season. In terms of next season, Leitl needs to build on his solid end to the season. Bringing in a proven goal scorer is key to give them a chance of moving up the table. They have a number of promising young players in the squad so it’s important they can keep hold of them.
