Football Season Review

№6: FC Volendam

FC Volendam are famous for the high amount of promotions and relegations and the orange side was one of the title contenders again with that in mind. Robert Molenaar's men were able to keep up with teams like VVV-Venlo, Jong Ajax and MVV Maastricht for quite some time, but the lack of form during the deciding months of the season eventually proved fatal. The results were more than good enough to enter the play-offs, but the fans just weren't happy with the disappointing results. This even resulted in Robert Molenaar's surprising departure near the very end. Berry Smit, a trainer from the youth academy, had to turn the tide in the Kras Stadium, but it was just too little too late for FC Volendam. His team did enter the play-offs and a 2-2 home draw in the semi-final against NAC Breda even restored some of the hope, but the season ended only four days later when NAC recorded a clinical 2-0 win at home. FC Volendam definitely had the chance this year to push for glory, but the inconsistency eventually proved fatal. The matches at home could have pushed this club to a better finishing spot, but the form just wasn't there in the own Kras Stadium, which was rather surprising to be honest as Volendam only recorded nine wins in nineteen home games. Some local fan favourites like Kees Kwakman, Jack Tuyp and Henny Schilder were there to provide experience, but it just wasn't enough this year to push for promotion. Volendam's team definitely contained some quality players, but the lack of consistency and the disappointing results in front of the own crowd hit the team hard. The club will have to find a new manager now as soon as possible to restore the confidence if they want to push for a top five classification after the Summer.
