A solid run of form midway through the campaign saw Augsburg meet their pre-season expectations of finishing clear of the relegation zone as they registered their best points tally in seven years. However it was not enough to save Jesse Thorup from the sack with Augsburg ending the campaign on a poor run that saw them lose five of their final seven games. Augsburg have taken a gamble by appointing Sandro Wagner whose only previous managerial experience was with SpVgg Unterhaching outside the top three divisions. Augsburg have managed to hold on to their regular players ahead of the new season, converting loan moves of Chrislain Matsima and Cedric Zesiger into permanent transfers. They have also improved their options in the midfield by bringing in Han-Noah Massengo and Robin Fellhauer from Burnley and Elversberg respectively while Elias Saad and Kyliane Dong are expected to provide competition on the flanks. With regards to departures, Felix Uduokhai has brought in the most money, though he was on loan at Besiktas last season, while attackers Dion Beljo and Irvin Cardona have also been sold. Fredrik Jensen though will be the most missed with the midfielder making 20 appearances last season but leaving after his contract expired. Augsburg's starting lineup will have a familiar feel on the opening day of the season, with Massengo likely to be the only change, and much will depend on how quickly will Wagner be able implement his style of play on to the players.

Target

Have enough quality to secure another mid-table finish though the club will be hoping to push into the top half of the table
