Bayer Leverkusen failed to repeat their unbeaten campaign from previous season as they were well short of the title race last time around, finishing 13 points behind champions Bayern Munchen. A slow start and inconsistent performances ensured they were playing catch up right from the start while they also endured a shock exit from the DFB Cup in the semifinals though they did finished in the top two for only the second time in 14 years. It has been a summer of change for Bayer with Xabi Alonso leaving for Real Madrid and the club have replaced him with Dutch coach Erik Ten Hag who has a point to prove following a disappointing spell with Manchester United. There have been a host of changes in the squad as well with Bayer losing key players during the summer, the biggest being Florian Wirtz for a record transfer fee. Jerome Frimpong and Jonathan Tah have also left the club while Odilon Kossounou, Lukas Hradecky and Granit Xhaka are other departees who were regular starters. Bayer have brought in players with Jarell Quansah arriving from Liverpool while Malik Tillman is seen as a replacement for Wirtz. Mark Flekken is expected to be the first choice keeper while Janis Blaswich will be the backup, especially with Kovar also having left on a free transfer. The club have taken a big gamble by concentrating on untested young players in the transfer window and the new arrivals will need to bed in and show their quality quickly if Bayer are to put up any sort of title challenge this season

Target

Have lost key players and their manager and while closing down the gap to the top will be the hope, Champions League qualification will be the minimum expected this season
