Colchester were one of the most inconsistent sides in the league last season, as they had spells during which they looked like world beaters, but also spells during which they looked completely hopeless. Their point tally was just enough to see them finish above the relegation zone, and they definitely seem to be a club that is in a steady decline, given that they were often considered to be one of the outside promotion candidates until two seasons ago. Joe Dunne will point to the fact that he did not spend the entire previous season in charge and will be looking to stabilise the club and keep them well above the drop zone during the entire upcoming season. None of the important players left the club, as John White and Jack Compton were both hardly regulars, while three of the players that impressed last season: Craig Eastmond, Sanchez Watt and Sam Walker, have all once again signed for the U's. This basically means that Daniel Pappoe, who signs on loan from Chelsea, is the only new face in the squad, so it's fair to say that this season's version of Colchester will be of similar strength to the last season's one. However, it needs to be noted that some of their regulars, such as Freddie Sears, Watt, Eastmond, Drey Wright and Gavin Massey, are young footballers, and it would not be a surprise to see either of them considerably improving on their last season's form.

Target

They have displayed horrible inconsistency throughout the previous campaign, and Joe Dunne will be desperate to steady the ship and get the best out of his men more often. A midtable finish would be seen as a decent achievement but, if they have too many off-days, it would not be beyond the realms of imaginable to see them fighting against the drop.
