Gillingham finished the previous season as 13th, but their finishing position hides what their campaign was like, as they spent the wast majority of the season battling against the drop. The board opted to part ways with Steve Lovell right after their survival was mathematically secured, with the experienced Steve Evans being named his successor in late May. Evans will enter the new position with the desire to bounce back following a disappointing last year's spell at Peterborough, which saw the Posh start the campaign well enough, but decline over time, causing him to lose his job. Two key players have left in top scorer Tom Eaves, who had a superb campaign, and keeper Tomas Holy, whose fantastic form earned him a move to Ipswich. Gillingham's results were often better than their displays, with Holy's goalkeeping and Evans's finishing often being the reason for that. While a rather competent replacement for Holy was signed in Jack Bonham, the Gills are yet to bring in an out-and-out striker to replace Eaves, but will certainly be unable to bring in a proven 20-goal-a-season man and can only hope to strike gold. Their playing squad certainly seems weaker than it was last season, but the board will look towards Evans and hope for their experienced boss to turn them into a side capable of displaying steel and staying up.
